Jenkinsville residents under boil water advisory
by Kevin Boozer
Staff Writer

A boil water advisory has been issued for residents in Jenkinsville until further notice.

George Ginyard, president of the board of trustees for the Jenkinsville Water Company Inc., said that routine monthly sampling revealed total chloroform bacteria to be present in the water.

On July 6 E. coli bacteria were found in the water supply.

“We are working with DHEC (S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control) on this and following their instructions to the letter,” Ginyard said.

Residents can still bathe in the water. The restrictions apply to drinking the water or cooking with it.

Water must be boiled for one minute before drinking or cooking.

Boiled or bottled water also should be used for ice, brushing one’s teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.

He said the company had contacted local news outlets and would be putting up postings at stores, post offices and other public areas in the affected district.

The sites tested were from those of actual residents.

At this time, Ginyard said, the company must go back and sample all wells in its system as well as retest the sample houses and each residence above or below that address in the water line.

Ginyard said the test results should be available five days from when the samples are collected.

If total chloroform is shown to be present in that set of tests, water treatment would start immediately.
