Richard Winn Academy celebrated Homecoming recently. In honor of this, Friday was spirit day. This day is the most important day of Homecoming Week because it is time for all of us to show our pride and spirit for our school.
Richard Winn’s colors are blue, gold and white. Many students wore these colors on Friday. However, after arriving at school, we all added a different color to our attire by wearing bandannas given to us by the school.
At first, I was puzzled as to why these were being given to us. Then, it was explained to me that they were in support of our former head of school, Ms. Beth Reid. She recently learned that she has breast cancer.
When I?first learned the meaning of the bandannas, I?thought to myself, “How sweet! What a great idea!” I?felt proud of my school for supporting someone who is not a visible part of our school any more. I?say she is not a ‘visible part” of our school because she is not currently involved, but she has certainly been an important person in our school over the years. She has not only held the position of head of school, but was also a student, a basketball team member and a teacher during her time at Richard Winn Academy. Ms. Reid has been dedicated to us and our school for so many years, so why wouldn’t we support her through her struggle with cancer?
Loyalty, dedication and love for one another are ingrained in the minds of every student at RWA. The family - like atmosphere of the school overwhelms and engulfs you every day. Our headmaster Mr. (Chris) Thoma, has told me on numerous occasions that everyone’s priorities should be as follows: religion (God), family, academics and extracurricular activities. Family is second on this list for a reason. Even through Ms. Reid is not the head of school anymore, she is still loved by many and considered as family.
I?would like to wish Ms. Reid much faith and strength as she goes through this difficult time. I?want her to know that all the students of Richard Winn support her completely and would love to do anything to help. Once again, we love you Ms. Reid and GOOD LUCK!
