“We are happy that the students were wise enough to report it,” District Public Information Officer George Pinckey said. “That was great.”
Winnsboro Department of Public Safety Chief Wayne Yates said that school staff received word that Malcolm Davis, 18, had a gun.
A Winnsboro Department of Public Safety incident report reads in part, “The officer, along with coaching staff of the high school, did search the offender’s locker in the football locker room and found a loaded handgun in a black bag. The handgun was secured and confiscated and the subject was called into the coaches office where he was interviewed.”
Davis was arrested, taken to jail and charged with possessing a firearm on the school grounds and unlawful possession by a person under age 21.
The student has been suspended from school, pending a hearing with School Board of Trustees members to discuss expulsion.
The report concludes by saying that the case is still under investigation.
Pinckney confirmed that there would be additional security at FCHS’ homecoming game Friday night against Eau Claire. He cited the use of additional lights and a metal detector. Plans also called for the use of one main gate into the stadium and increased district staff presence at the game.
