On that day he got a new name - Smart Cat - and a awesome green cape.
Now every smart tabby knows that being large and out of shape is no good. And since Smart Cat is the smartest feline in the universe, the next time he looked in a mirror he knew that he needed to make some changes in his life.
A funny thing happened as he stared into the mirror, instead of his flabby self, he imagined what he could look like as a smaller, but muscular, tabby with plenty of energy. He liked the image and decided to do something about trying to look just like it.
Since Smart Cat lives at the ETV station in Columbia, the humans who run the station decided to put Smart Cat on TV so he could show girls and boys what he was trying to do and how they, too, could get in shape and eat better.
“It was hard at first,” Smart Cat admitted to The Herald Independent. “Even on TV, the boys and girls saw me get out of breath sometimes. But every day I was able to exercise just a little bit more. I had to learn to start slowly, and to make it something I do every day, like brushing my teeth or eating vegetables or having lots of fun.”
Although Smart Cat is now buff and enjoying the benefits of being in shape and eating well, he is still on ETV every day, leading boys and girls in exercises between many of the ETV for Kids programs which are broadcast from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
“I not only exercise, but I also eat whatever the fruit or vegetable of the day is,” the former flabby tabby said.
The fit feline advises boys and girls to start exercising slowly, but to do it every day even if it is just a little.
“It’s fun to go on walks with your family every day, even if it's just around the outside of the house a few times,” Smart Cat said. “It might be two, or five, or ten times, depending on how old you are. The most important thing, though, is to exercise every day.”
No longer a fat cat, Smart Cat loves riding a bike, jumping rope, walking with friends and playing chase or tag.
“Some people like to run and play with their dog,” he said. “ I'm a cat, so that's not always a good idea for me.”
Since he lives at ETV, Smart Cat loves videos, but the rule at ETV is he can play his video game the same amount of time that he played outside that day.
After school Smart Cat eats fruit for a snack. He especially like grapes and peaches and oranges.
“Candy, cake and cookies are fine for holidays and birthdays, but they're not for every day,” he said.
Since he is a cat, Smart Cat has no children, but he loves boys and girls so much he and the humans at ETV developed The Smart Cat Seal of Approval, a special signal to parents and children that the next program on ETV is okay for children.
“There are little ratings in the corner for big people, but I have a seal that's big and colorful so everyone can see and hear it,” the fit feline said. “ETV teaches people of all ages, so it's important to remember that not all ETV shows are for children.
“Sometimes even science and nature programs can be a little scary for little children to watch, so my Seal of Approval means we have taken special care to make sure that the programs you see are just right for you.”
