Palmetto Health has informed Fairfield Memorial Hospital that it is not interested in a short - term extension of the management contract between the two parties.

The contract will expire on Dec. 31.

In a letter to FMH attorney Ernie J. Nauful, Palmetto Health CEO Chuck Beaman wrote, “The terms and conditions of the proposed extension are unacceptable in that it is my opinion that FMH needs to have an experienced well - trained and qualified executive, such as Mr. Dozier, leading the hospital. Palmetto Health does not have executives available with these superb qualifications for only short - term assignments.”

Beaman concluded his letter by asking that FMH pay the $241,600 owed to Palmetto Health by Dec. 31.

Some of the benefits enjoyed by Fairfield Memorial under the contract are as follows:

  • discounts achieved through the Premier group purchasing arrangement;

  • possible loss of clinical pathology services rendered through Palmetto Health facilities;

  • elimination of recently negotiated arrangements for expedited emergency medical transfer from FMH to Palmetto Richland;

  • and physician recruitment assistance at no charge.

    Palmetto Health also funded the salary and fringe benefits for CEO Larry Dozier. He will be leaving the hospital on Dec. 31.

    In early October the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Board voted to not renew its long - term contract with Palmetto Health.

    Days later at a meeting called, “to answer questions from employees and concerned citizens ...,” the Board voted to ask Palmetto Health for an extension of the management agreement until July 1, 2008.
