The public is invited to a 75th birthday party for legendary blues guitarist Drink Small. The drop-in will be held in Downtown Winnsboro, at the Red Tree Gallery 143 S. Congress Street (803)815-TREE

Drop by to say Happy Birthday to Drink on Saturday, January 26, 2008 anytime between 7 - 11 pm.

Drink Small (his real name) was born in 1933 in Bishopville (Lee County), SC.

Known worldwide as "The Blues Doctor", he plays virtuoso blues guitar, two-fisted piano, and sings in an inimitable basso profundo voice.

Drink is a recipient of the S.C. Folk Heritage Award, a member of the S.C. Hall of Fame, and has spent his life touring, recording, and playing a spectrum of Southern roots music.

He has performed at some of the nation's top music festivals: Chicago Blues Festival (twice), New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (three times), King Biscuit Blues Festival (twice), Smithsonian-Folklife Festival, Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, Lin-coln Center and Central Park concert series (NYC), and every major blues festi-val in the Southeast.

He has been written up in myriad music magazines (Downbeat, Metronome, Blues Revue, Il Blues, Juke Blues, Soul Bag, Blues News) and even made the cover of Living Blues. (July/August, 1992 issue).

At the age of almost 75, Drink Small is at the top of his game and performing better than ever.

Drink stopped by the Red Tree Gallery earlier this week to look the place over and talk with Gallery owner Linda Dye.

‘That morning was seriously one of the best days of my life,’ Dye wrote later about the expereince, ‘(Drink) is amazing. He can do blues, jazz, and had that old Martin just high-fiving sometimes.

‘He could slap that thing, pick it, fondle it, you name it.

‘I will never be able to sing like that gain, it was just raw energy.

“With Drink playing and singing, I did the call and response, and then I stumbled around on the piano with him--we had our own bluesfest,’ wrote Dye.

The drop-in is sponsored by Red Tree Gallery, Boyd Brown, and Christ Central Ministries.
