Winnsboro is one of hundreds of communities nationwide that will hold an Underage Drinking Prevention: National Town Hall Meeting.

The Town Hall Meeting will be held on March I8, 2008, 6:00 pm at Fairfield Central High School Auditorium to discuss and raise awareness about the impact of underage drinking.

Fairfield Behavioral Health Services, in collaboration with the Federal Government’s Interagency Coordinating Committee for the Prevention of Underage Drinking is sponsoring the event in partnership with the Fairfield County School District.

Among young people, the prevalence of underage drinking increases with age, making it more important than ever to begin teaching youth at an early age about the dangers of alcohol. In Fairfield County during 2001-02:

  • 25.5% of 8th graders and 35.7% of high schoolers said they had used alcohol in the past month;

  • Many first used alcohol at an early age: I8.1 % had used alcohol by age 11 or younger, 33.2% by age 13, and 60.2% by age 15;

  • 68.8% of eighth graders and 65.2% of seniors felt there was not a great risk in drinking two drinks a day and

  • 52.3% of eighth graders and 40.6% of high schoolers felt there was not a great risk in drinking 5 drinks every weekend. (www.kidscount.org).

    A $200.00 prize will be awarded to the school with the greatest percentage of parent representation. Door prizes and refreshments will be served. Local school students will provide entertainment. Fairfield Behavioral Health Services invites the community to come out and support this event. For further information please contact Shemika Johnson or Cheryl Y. Goodwin at (803) 635-2335.
