Mr. Kennedy died on March 14, 2008.
A native of Fairfield County, he was a son of the late Jasper and Ethel Moore Cohen. He served in the United States Army in WWII and the Korean War. While stationed at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii, he was a starting baseball player for the Schofield Barracks Redlanders. He made the All-Star team as a starting outfielder. He had a batting average of .315.
Prior to his military service, Mr. Kennedy played for the Columbia All-Stars, a Negro league team, traveling as far south as Georgia and as far north as Virginia.
He was retired from the construction business and was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church.
Survivors include children, Ray Lene (Robert) Kinard of Columbia, Anderson “Fluff” (Diane) Kennedy of Winnsboro and Deborah LaVelle Kennedy Boyd of Elgin; sister, Mary Harrison of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Renee Cooks of Columbia, Lori Lewers of Columbia, Tammy (Lawrence) Spearman of Philadelphia, PA, Cathy (Darrell) Fowler of Tallahassee, FL, Nicole Hampton of Atlanta, GA, John Duffy Hampton IV, of Elgin, Keisha Parker of Glen Burnie, MD and Charles Parker, also of Glen Burnie, MD; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mattie Lou Evans, Bernice (Brooks) Ashford, Davie Johnson, all of Winnsboro; special cousins, Lollie (Albert) Stoner of Huntsville, AL and William Nelson of Winston Salem, N.C.; daughters-in-law, Delores Kennedy of Severn, MD, Terrence Ruffin of Atlanta, GA and Angela Wells of Columbia; nieces and nephews and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Anderson was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Edna Pearson Kennedy and an uncle, Ernest Moore.
Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home served the Kennedy family.
