The Ridgeway community invites all of Fairfield County to celebrate quilting, storytelling and the visual arts at the 2nd Annual Arts on the Ridge from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday.

“We felt like this should be a real celebration of the talent that is here in Fairfield County,” Ridgeway historical and cultural committee chair Virginia Lacy said. “This should be a great day for everyone.”

Exhibits of quilts and art will be located at the Century House and in downtown businesses. There will also be quilting demonstrations by local quilter Peni Chandler.

Additionally there will also be Fairfield County - related historical film shorts, music and appearances by Pine Tree Players performers. Plants will be on display and many will be for sale. A farmer’s market will be held across the street from the Century House.

The Fairfield County Library, through funds provided by the McMaster Endowment, will distribute free books to children. Additionally there will be an information table for Imagination Library, a program which mails new, free, age - appropriate books to registered Fairfield County children between birth and age five.

Visual arts will include both inside and outside works, watercolors, oils, acrylics, pen and ink and photography. Both adult and student art will be on display.

“All of the visual artists have some tie to Fairfield County,” Lacy said. “Fairfield County is the subject of every piece of art.”

Storytelling will take place at the Century House and will include local storyteller Frances Lee O’Neal, as well as Shelah Montes and Suzette Hawkins. Telling will be at 11a.m. and 2 p.m.

Hawkins is described as follows: “She creates mood and drama beautifully through voice control and careful pacing, but always lets the story be the centerpiece. Her repertoire ranges from humorous tales, to ghost stories and other tales that lead the listener through a gamut of emotions.”

O’Neal began her storytelling career in Chester County. She was the producer of “Telling Our Tales” in Ridgeway and a number of Telebration observances in Winnsboro. She has also told tales at the Augusta Baker storytelling event held annually in Columbia.

Montes is a native of England and is expected to tell tales about World II in that nation.
