At 4 p.m. on Mothers Day, Sunday May 11, Winnsboro’s First United Methodist Church will host a concert by the alumni of the Christian Youth Choir of Fairfield County.

The event will take place at the White Oak Baptist Conference Center in White Oak. A love offering will be taken during the concert.

The Choir was formed around 1973 at First United Methodist Church, when the Church was pastored by Rev. Don McKinney (1971 - 1977). They performed under the direction of Esther Baughman, a First United Methodist Church member.

Approximately 20 children from the church were founding members of the Choir.

That number grew to around 115 members from all across Fairfield County.

The company included children from the Baptist, Episcopal, First Methodist, Church of God, Zion Presbyterian, Bethel ARP, Nazarene, Stephen

Greene and Gordon Memorial Methodist at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Winnsboro, Bethel Methodist Church in Greenbrier, the Presbyterian Church in Ridgeway, the Baptist Church in Ridgeway and there were even children who came from Sumter in the Choir.

The Choir performed throughout the County and the State.

Approximately 100 former members will be returning for the concert.

Six members have died since the group disbanded. They were Can Perry, Julie Brooks (Hall), Stewart Harmon, Mary Leitner, Kim King (Motte) and Susan Collins (Howell).

A reception will be hosted by the members of the First United Methodist Church after the concert. The gathering will be held at Honeysuckle Acres Bed & Breakfast in Winnsboro.
