Number of open positions in school district suspect

“How many classroom teachers are leaving the Fairfield County School District for the next school year and how does it compare to the turnover rates in the past 3-5 years?”

So reads a recent Ask Bobb question sent to staff writer Bobb Hane.

Twice he has received statements from the District office on this subject.

Nonetheless, we have questions about the numbers in the statements, and feel some reluctance to publish them.

We were especially concerned Tuesday night, when a School Board member expressed his uncertainty about exactly how many teachers will not be returning to the Fairfield County School District for the 2008 - 2009 school year.

We want to know the number of teachers who have served notice of their intention not to return, whether that notice was given prior to the issuance of contracts or by not signing contracts offered by the District.

This should be an easy question to answer. The Herald Independent believes that you have a right to know.
