Funeral services for Ethel Margaret “Maggie” Carter, age 82, were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church, conducted by the Reverend Walter Ballenger, with interment following at the Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family did receive visitors at Pope Funeral Home on Friday between 6 and 8 p.m.

Mrs. Carter was born July 6, 1925, in Lexington, SC, the daughter of the late Jesse James Quinton and Ethel Bledsoe Harmon and wife of the late Dewey G. Carter. She was retired from Manhattan Shirt Corporation and was a member of Gordon Memorial Church. Mrs. Carter died May 20, 2008.

Surviving Mrs. Carter are three sons, James H. Whisman and his wife Bonnie of San Antonio, TX., Joe S. Carter and his wife Irene of Winnsboro, and Billy Carter and his wife, Jean of Winnsboro; four daughters, Margie Epting and her husband Wayne of Leesville, Dianne Dove and her husband Billy of Winnsboro, Cyndie Bledsoe and her husband Glenn of Lexington, Janice Carter of Winnsboro and step daughter Jan Barnette and her husband Jimmy of Terrell, TX.; step-brother Robert Harmon of Newberry; two step-sisters, Pearl Whitman of Winnsboro and Rhodie Kyzer of Lexington; 20 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, James Quinton.

Mrs. Carter was a very patriotic lady who dearly loved America, her church, minister and all of her family. She also was an avid Gamecock fan who loved those bus trips and never met a stranger. Maggie was loved by all who knew her. Memorials may be made to the American cancer Society or to Gordon Memorial UMC, 502 Fifth Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180.

Pallbearers will be Michael W. T. Carter, Bill Dove, K. E. Carter, Carlis Epting, Eric Epting and Joey Gleason. Flower girls will be Andrea L. Carter, Dana Dove, Sabrina Swygert and Jenna Price.

Pope Funeral Home is serving the Carter family.
