Just because it’s June, that doesn’t mean that school is off our minds, or those of the people at the school district.
Students should have already begun reading from their summer reading list even if they are not attending summer school.
Every grade has a required reading list that should be completed by students by August 22. A list can be found on each school’s website or at the Fairfield County Library.
We all know children would rather not think about school during the summer break but for many of them, the 22-day session of summer school started this week.
Dr. Jeff Long from the Fairfield County School District says that summer school is important for children who are behind and need to start the next school year on an “even keel”.
Dr. Long stresses that summer school is not a baby sitting service but an important way to get students up to the necessary standards.
Kelly Miller is the location of the elementary level summer school while the middle school and high school students attend their summer classes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in their own schools.
If your child is attending summer school or just finding time to do the required reading, encourage them to not completely forget about school.
Even parents have summer homework, of a sorts.
The district will hold several parental involvement events this summer to discuss topics such as student grading, end of quarter testing, codes of conduct, bullying, and other policies.
If you are interested in these community meetings, you may attend one of the following events:
And don’t forget that the magnet school will have uniforms next year so you can spend some of the summer shopping for light blue shirts and khaki pants, skirts or skorts.
