It’s time for school bells to start ringing, classrooms to start buzzing, and teachers to start off on their year-long adventure with a new group of students. Back-to-school time is a natural time for parents with children of all ages to pause and prepare for the year ahead. For educators, it is time to take stock of educational progress.
In 2007 and 2008, the Fairfield County School District undertook a comprehensive review of its needs for the future. FCSD Board of Trustees, students, alumnae, faculty, parents, and community members participated in determining how to best fulfill the school’s mission to accelerate student learning for the next five years, and when complete, will result in a plan that enhances the delivery of the District’s mission and programs, inspires learning, fosters growth, and gives our students and staff state-of-the-art facilities, as well as a superior academic program. A strategic plan for FCSD emerged from the process. The plan addressed facilities, people, and programs. Key goals, such as improving student achievement, improving parent and community involvement, building leadership, improving student resources, were established as a result. Measureable improvement objectives were given a timeline for completion.
This comprehensive planning process helped lead to the opening of the new Gordon Odyssey Academy, scheduled to open for the 2008-2009 school year. This new school will include multiple programs to address the variety of learning styles of students. The program is designed for students and adults who desire additional assistance in meeting goals for graduating with a high school diploma or its equivalent, and those interested in acquiring college credit. The academy will also support students who are at risk of dropping out of school and students who may benefit from social, behavioral and academic interventions to assist them in transitioning back to their home school. This facility is located at 240 Roosevelt Street in Winnsboro.
Also new this year is the Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science, located at 1647 Highway 321 By-Pass in Winnsboro. The Magnet School will include an emphasis on math, science, strings and dance. The school is dedicated to providing real world experiences through exposure to science concepts and to a rigorous math/algebra infused curriculum.
In March 2008, the State Department of Education conducted an external accountability review of the District in the areas of Leadership and Governance, Curriculum and Instruction, and Professional Development. The results showed that FCSD met 25 out of 25 performance standards. Only 12 out of 24 were met in March 2007. The State Department of Education commended FCSD for the emphasis that was now being placed on teaching and learning.
The District is excited about the releases of other upcoming State accountability data. Advanced Placement Assessment and Scholastic Aptitude Test results are scheduled to be released in August, Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test results in September, High School Assessment Program and End of Course Examination Program in October, and State Report Cards in November.
A district-wide Code of Conduct will be given to students the first week of school. The Board of Trustees for Fairfield County School District believes it is the responsibility of students, parents, and staff to see that students attend school and conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, as student behavior is important to the entire education process. The Code addresses student, parent, and staff rights and responsibilities, a progressive discipline plan, and the District’s attendance policy.
Ongoing parental involvement community meetings took place county-wide over the summer. Issues being discussed are student grading and expectations, the Code of Conduct, promotion and retention policy, end of quarter testing (nine week test), and percentage toward grades. Parents have given their input and suggestions at these meetings. The District believes parent involvement is key to helping children learn to his or her fullest potential. Parent suggestions and volunteer work are always appreciated.
The Fairfield County School District has an open door policy and encourages parents to communicate often with the school and staff if questions or needs arise. At any time during the year, if you have questions or concerns regarding your student’s progress, please call your student’s teacher, counselor, or administrative team member. A parent’s sustained interest in their child’s academic and social experiences at school can be great motivation for learning. Let your child see and feel that we are working together in every way to make this a terrific school year. FCSD has a tremendously dedicated and talented faculty and staff who are committed to providing your child with an outstanding school experience. We look forward to an exciting, productive and fun-filled school year!
