Funeral services for Edward Wesley Teal, Sr., age 78, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday September 13, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Reverend Bundy Bynum and the Reverend Donald W. ‘Bud’ Boatwright. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, SC. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. on Friday evening at Pope Funeral Home.

Mr. Teal died Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at his home in Winnsboro, SC. He was born in Chesterfield, SC to the late Martin Luther and Pauline Campbell Teal, Sr. He was a graduate of Wofford College with a degree in business administration. While at Wofford he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the Blue Key Society. He also played in the Wofford band and was a Pi Gamma Mu.

After his graduation from Wofford, Ed proudly served in the Korean conflict as a pharmacy technician. He then entered the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and graduated at the top of his pharmacy class, receiving the Lehr and Fink Gold Medal for his accomplishment. He was also a member of the Rho Chi Honor Society.

“Dr. Teal,” as he was affectionately known by many friends and customers, purchased the Economy Drug Store in Winnsboro in 1960. He and his beloved wife and partner, Ruby, remained in that business until his retirement in 1993. His compassion, his dedication to those he served, and his integrity will long be remembered by those who were fortunate to have been associated with him.

Mr. Teal loved his community and was involved in various civic organizations. He served as a member of the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Board and the Richard Winn Academy Board of Trustees. In 1965 he received the prestigious Civitan Citizen of the Year award.

Ed was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winnsboro and served in various capacities. His strong faith was very evident during his long illness. He never complained and accepted his situation with complete trust in God. His positive attitude has been and will continue to be an inspiration to his family and friends.

Mr. Teal is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruby Hurst Teal; one son, Dr. Edward W. Teal, Jr. and his wife Hazel Haskin of Loris, SC; two daughters, Dr. Carolyn Venable and her husband, Dr. James Madison Venable, III, of Naples, FL, and Mrs. Ann Britt and her husband William Joseph Britt, III of Blythewood, SC; six grand children, Kathryn, Edward and Benjamin Teal of Loris, SC, and Joe, Teal and Camp Britt of Blythewood, SC; and one sister, Lillian Chriesman of Eltopia, WA. Mr. Teal was predeceased by two brothers, Martin L. Teal, Jr., and Charles E. Teal, Sr.

In lieu of flowers, the Teal family requests memorials be made to either the First United Methodist Church, 109 College St., Winnsboro, SC 29180 or, MUSC Foundation - Hollings Cancer Center, PO Box 250955, Charleston, SC 29425.

Many thanks to Drs. Boulware, Dial, Gaddy, Green, and Sherman for their wonderful loving care. The family also thanks all the staff at MUSC, Richland Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Gaddy’s office who helped make his treatments enjoyable. Most importantly, thanks to all for your prayers and thoughts.
