Tom Connor has been named the 2008 Ridgeway Citizen of the Year and last week Mayor Charlene Herring presented him with a plaque recognizing his service to the Ridgeway community.
Mr. Connor was nominated by his daughter, Ridgeway resident Dede Ruff, citing his central role in the founding of Pig on the Ridge. According to Ruff’s nomination, “It began with his idea as a way to celebrate the Town’s bicentennial; it has become a festival that brings the entire community together….He has worked many hours not only to plan and organize but also to build and nurture relationships among the area’s businesses, churches, and townspeople that culminate each year in great celebration.”
At the presentation, Connor thanked his family, the community, and the town and had this to say regarding Pig on the Ridge: “Any honor I receive….I have to share with [Councilman] Donald [Prioleau] and [Councilman] Rufus [Jones]. They bought into this concept ten years ago, and have not stopped working on it since then.”
Connor’s efforts to bring Meals on Wheels to Ridgeway was also cited as one of his great contributions to the community. For more than ten years, he has chaired the committee that coordinates the delivery of meals to elderly folks in the Ridgeway area, including continuing to deliver meals himself as well.
Connor has also helped to coordinate Ridgeway’s Christmas parade, according to Ruff, “the largest one in Fairfield County.” Mayor Herring asked Connor to ride as Grand Marshall in the parade at this year’s Pig on the Ridge, to be held October 31 - Nov.1, and he accepted.
