Funeral services for Leila Gladden Johnston, age 86, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, conducted by Reverend Peter G. Rambo, Sr. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family did receive visitors at the church one hour prior to the service.
Leila Johnston entered her eternal rest on September 13, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Walter C. and Lenora Hornsby Gladden and wife of the late Thomas L. Johnston, Sr. for 45 years.
Mrs. Johnston spent most of her life in Fairfield County. She attended the public schools in Fairfield. As a devoted life-long member of Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder.
She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. In her later years she moved to Chester County where she had a second career working for the Senior Citizen’s Organization of Chester, SC.
Mrs. Johnston is survived by her son, Thomas L. Johnston, Jr. and his wife, Valerie Walsh Johnston; two grandchildren, Thomas Brooks Johnston and Erica Johnston Newell; two great-grandchildren, Nickolas Peyton Newell and Paris Lacie Newell, all of Fort Mill, SC; a brother, William E. Gladden and his wife, Jeanette, of Chester; and her sister, Ophelia G. Bennett of Rock Hill, SC. She is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly.
