Student drop-offs went smoothly for the first day of school on Wednesday at Richard Winn Academy.
Younger students held parents hands as they walked through the doors and began that ritual of fall complete with new uniforms, back packs and school supplies.
Teachers were patient and caring as they helped the young ones back into the school day routine.
While there were few changes to the over all curriculum for the youngest students, during the 2012-13 school year, head of school Dr. Nancy Coleman said there have been some changes to the schedule for older students.
Students in grades 7-12 will change from a six period day to a seven period school day.
The added class period will be used for enrichment opportunities that extend beyond the standard academic curriculum.
Choices the students have include practicing for the quiz bowl team, doing a mock trial course, working with Lego robotics, receiving extra tutoring, making art or receiving SAT and ACT preparation.
Coleman is excited by the prospects of the new class period.
“We are excited about it. The teachers have been good about brainstorming and sharing ideas to make a difference. It is mostly teachers who are leading the other classes and willing to take on the extra enrichment opportunities,” Coleman said.
