On Senior Night the Richard Winn Eagles came out fired up to face the defending state champion Patriots from Wardlaw Academy.
In their last home game seniors Zelick Levy, Sidney Edenfield, Corey Davis, Logan Gibbons and Reid Johnson led a hard nosed defensive attack early in the contest. Eagles swarmed to the football, using stack defensive tactics, hustle and heart to stifle the Patriot offense early on.
On the Patriots opening drive they were moving the ball into the red zone when the Eagles defense bent but did not break. RWA held the Patriots to a turnover on downs.
Richard Winn took an early 6-0 lead on an athletic play by sophomore quarterback Matt Taylor. After a shotgun snap sailed over his head, Taylor retreated, scooped up the ball and ran back toward the line of scrimmage. He spotted Logan Gibbons streaking down field and hooked up on a 35-yard touchdown pass.
A fake field goal pass by Mason Gibbons on the extra point was no good. The Eagles lead held up most of the first quarter.
With 3:56 left in the first quarter the Patriots again were in the Eagles red zone and again they went for it on fourth down. The Eagles defense was up to the challenge with Reid Johnson breaking up a fade route at the two-yard line to end the scoring threat.
In the second quarter, Wardlaw Academy freshman quarterback connected with senior Kerry Cockrell on a pass to set up the Patriots at the Eagles 16-yard line. Cockrell finished the drive with a touchdown run to tie the game. The two-point conversion was good, giving Wardlaw an 8-6 lead.
Quarterback Holton Manly took the ball down the field with several quarterback draws on the next Patriot possession.
A 36-yard touchdown run by Wardlaw Academy gave them a 14-6 lead with 3:01 left in the half.
Another snap sailed over the head of an Eagle quarterback but Austin Knox was unable to recover. The Patriots seized possession and kept the momentum, running the ball to the Eagle one-yard line.From there a power running play by Cockrell put Wardlaw up 22-6. The two-point conversion run by Ed Williams was good, giving Wardlaw a 24-6 halftime lead.
On a crisp fall night, the Eagles came out fired up in the second half, and eventually chipped away at the Wardlaw lead.
With eight minutes remaining in the third quarter another scoring run extended the Patriot lead to 30-6.
The Eagles answered with a scoring drive of their own capped off by a scoring run by Sidney Edenfield. Reid Johnson scored the two-point conversion to trim the lead to 30-14 with four minutes remaining in the quarter.
With 4:44 to go in the fourth quarter seniors Knox and Johnson connected on a touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good and the Eagles trailed 30-22.
That was as close as the Eagles could come, as Wardlaw added another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion to extend its lead to 38-22.
This was the final home game of the season for Richard Winn Academy.
Senior cheerleaders and senior football players were honored during halftime along with their parents and siblings.
