‘Big John and my grandfather were best friends, being described by many as the "Mutt and Jeff" of South Carolina politics.
‘Senator Martin was a man who lived life the way it should be lived. He was a church man, a respected and respectful man, but I think the best way to describe him, would be that he was a man's man.
‘His love of family, friends, Fairfield County and South Carolina were rivaled only by his love of golf and his Gamecocks.
‘The lives of hundreds of thousands were made better by the fact that Senator Martin passed our way, and we are all fortunate for the life that he unselfishly lived.
‘South Carolina and her people have suffered a great loss this week, and the passing of John Martin and his generation will continue to be felt across our county, state and nation.
