Sheriff Herman Young and many members of the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office spent a Saturday afternoon cleaning up their adopted stretch of highway in an effort to keep Fairfield County litter free.

They picked up 43 bags of litter along the two mile stretch of Highway 34 at I-77.

Sheriff Herman Young not only works with the Sheriff’s office on Highway 34 but he also picks up along a stretch of road in the Blair community.

“It’s not something I feel that I have to do,” says Sheriff Young, “it’s something I want to do for our community.”

Adopt-a-Highway volunteers are asked to clean their stretch of 2 miles 4 times a year.

According to Mary Urias of Keep Fairfield Beautiful, much of the litter found alongside the road comes from uncovered loads or trash blowing out of vehicles.

Keep Fairfield Beautiful (KFB) is urging all citizens to please remember that it is the law that your trash is to be secured or covered so as to contain it in your vehicle when you transport it to the recycling centers.

KFB also reminds citizens that there is a fine for littering.

Any group wishing to participate in the Adopt-a-Highway program or KFB Green Guardians, please call Mary Urias, Executive Director, KFB at 635-4722 to get more information.
