WINNSBORO — The Richard Winn Academy Lady Eagles continued their perfect season on Friday night, once more dispatching the Eagles of Newberry Academy.
RWA was led by eighth-grader guard Alyssa Atkerson’s 12 points. Jaycie Johnson added 11 and Jessie Stidham poured in 10 for the Lady Eagles in the 47-15 victory.
It was a homecoming of sorts for Coach Jason Haltiwanger who lives in Newberry and coached at Newberry Academy prior to coming to Richard Winn.
The game became so lopsided early on that Haltiwanger slowed the pace down. While the game allowed young players time to get experience, changing from their up-tempo style for purposes of sportsmanship got the Lady Eagles out of their rhythm and routine, resulting in some turnovers and sloppy play in the win.
Haltiwanger expects that trend to be corrected by the time they tip off against King Academy at noon on Saturday.
Things did not go so well for the RWA boys squad against Newberry Academy, with the Eagles from Winnsboro losing 63-39 in a contest that really was not that close. Coach Joe Pitt said his team had an off night. The third quarter put the game out of reach as the Newberry Academy Eagles went on an 18-5 run to pull away for good.
The game was a rough one on many levels for the Eagles who never got into the one and one free throw situation in either half. Pat Pope led RWA with ten points and Reid Johnson added 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Eagles.
Coach Pitt said that they are looking for better things to happen when they tip off with King Academy Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the next round of tournament play.
