FAIRFIELD COUNTY — The Fairfield County Public Library has taken the next step into technology by adding a new eBooks system.
The library is now a member of the Jasmine Digital Library which will allow library members to use all the library systems from home or work and on the go.
Jasmine Digital Library is a consortium of 15 South Carolina public library systems that have joined together to offer digital content through Overdrive, a major vendor of eBooks to public libraries.
The way the consortium works is that each of the libraries buys content that is available to the patrons of all participating libraries. The eBooks are just like printed books in that they can only be checked out by one person at a time.
A difference is that patrons can select between a list of due dates.
Patrons can also place holds on books and be notified once the book is ready for download to an iPad, Kindle, Nook, laptop or other device including smartphones.
The first step to get started with the new eBooks system is to make sure you have a library card and PIN number. If you do not have a card or have a card and do not have a PIN go to the public library to get set up. The only way to set up your PIN/password is if you come by the library.
Once you have obtained your card and PIN, go to jasmine.lib.overdrive.com and look for the “Getting Started” link. Follow the instructions in this section to set up a Jasmine account. You will then be able to access the free software needed to download books.
“If you have trouble getting set up, come to the library and remember to bring your Kindle, Nook or other devices with you,” said Chrishonda Gaither, community services librarian. Gaither said she has learned the Jasmine system and feels it is a good addition to the library services.
