FAIRFIELD COUNTY — The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department is taking its community oriented policing to another level this spring. Starting Tuesday the department will host a citizens academy each Tuesday night for six weeks.
Capt. Brad Douglas, public information officer for the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department, said this is the first class of this kind being offered by the department.
“We are looking forward to meeting the public and getting to know people better,” he said. “And hopefully, people will gain a better understanding of our office and how we operate. We also hope to form better personal relationships with community members, to accomplish a shared goal: to make Fairfield County a safe and healthy environment for all of us live, work, and play.”
The classes meet from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office Training Center off old Airport Road. One key part of the course is a critique period where local leaders, businesspeople, and average citizens can tell the officers things that are working well and can brainstorm other ways to improve on the public information dissemination and the education efforts of the department.
That give and take and constructive criticism is one thing officers hope this first class contains a lot of so the participants can shape future classes and education efforts in the county.
