WINNSBORO — Fairfield Memorial Hospital hosted an educational evening on heart health on Feb. 26 that featured musical entertainment by Susan Taylor, dinner served by Barn Express Cafeteria and testimony from three people who suffered a heart attack and lived to tell about it.

Taylor sang selections from her CD, On The Great Falls Road.

Guests heard personal “heart experiences” from Beth Bonds, Mike Williams and Clyde Sanders, all of whom suffered a heart attack recently and lived to tell about it.

Bonds had her heart attack about a year ago. She is currently undergoing cardiac rehabilitation at Fairfield Memorial Hospital and is doing well.

Williams, the hospital’s CEO, had quadruple bypass surgery and open heart surgery about five years ago. He made a miraculous recovery and lives a busy life.

“This was a wonderful event for our community,” Williams said. “The hospital is interested in keeping our citizens healthy as much as we are to take care of them when they are ill. We hope to make this an annual event.”

Sanders, a member of Winnsboro Town Council, enjoys telling people about his experience several years ago. He shared with the audience that he was a heavy smoker and had never been sick. He now enjoys his lifestyle and likes to encourage others to be “heart healthy.”

Dr. James Phillips, a cardiologist with The Columbia Heart group, was the guest speaker. He did a PowerPoint presentation on having a healthy heart and then did a question and answer session with the attendees.

Local elected officials were waiters and waitresses for the banquet. Those participating were Mayor Roger Gaddy, Clyde Sanders and Bill Haslett from the Town Council, County Council Chairman David Ferguson, Fairfield County School District Superintendent J.R. Green, School Board Chairman Beth Reid and School Board member Andrea Harrison.

At the end of the program, guests were invited to “tip” their waiters with all proceeds going to the American Heart Association. A total of $300 was collected. Door prizes were awarded. The waiter with the most “tips” from his or her table received a gift card to Wal Mart. Bill Haslett won that contest.
