WINNSBORO — Two candidates are vying for the Town of Winnsboro City Council District Two seat in the upcoming April 2 election. The candidates will participate in a forum March 21 at the Winnsboro Woman’s Club. The public is invited to attend.
The District 2 candidates are Sonya Kennedy and Stan Klaus. The election April 2 will also include Winnsboro Mayor and City Council District 4.
Each city council candidates completed a survey for The Herald Independent to share more about why they want to become council members. District 4 candidate Pam Smith will be profiled March 22 while Town Councilman Jack Wilkes will be profiled March 26. Today’s profile is of Stan Klaus.

Prior political experience: 12 years on Winnsboro Town Council District 2 with four of the 12 years as Mayor Pro-tem
1. Briefly discuss your background and qualifications for the office you are seeking. 12 years on Winnsboro Town Council District 2, Graduate of the South Carolina Municipal Leadership Training School, and Graduate of the South Carolina Economic Development School at the College of Charleston.
2. Why are you running for City Council? To better serve my district and the community and to develop a plan to bring downtown economic development to the town and to improve and develop the town utilities for future economic development and to bring jobs to Winnsboro.
3. What would you do to foster economic development in the town? To work with economic development in both town and county to develop a creative, dynamic and competitive business environment that fosters economic growth. There would be a focus on business and industry retention and expansion.
4. How would you improve the situation in the town? Improving the quality of life in town, a way in which the community comes together for the common good that generates a passion felt by residents and visitors alike. This is the legacy we’ll leave our future generations.
5. In your opinion, what are the biggest issues facing the town? What to do with the Mt. Zion property and Thespian Hall but also the town clock repairs. The other item is infrastructure, our water system and supply and how important it is to economic development.
6. What do you feel is the most important aspect of this position? Teamwork, working together as a whole with the common interest being the Town of Winnsboro and it’s people.
7. What will your number one priority be if you are elected? Sitting down together and putting a game plan together (Downtown Development, Infrastructure, and Quality of Life)
8. What is your favorite book and why? Bible. It’s a guideline for successful living.
9. If you are not a native of Fairfield County and/or Winnsboro, where are you from originally and when did you move here? Allentown, Pa. I moved here to work at Mack Trucks
