WINNSBORO — The Griffins JV baseball team is swinging some hot bats this first week of spring.

On March 16, the Griffins visited Westwood and scorched the Red Hawks for 17 runs on 15 hits. Vinson Beaver, Rod Sparks, Jerrell Suber, Antonio Jackson, Ivan Ruff and Lane Floyd all had multiple hits to pace the Griffins. Antonio Jackson pitched five strong innings with Ivan Ruff closing out the game with a scoreless last inning in the 17-6 victory.

Monday night the Griffins hosted their first home game against Great Falls.

Tydarious Young took the mound for his first start of the season and pitched into the third inning versus the Red Devils. The JV Griffins gave him early run support putting up a three spot in the first inning. They added four more runs in the second for an early 7-2 lead.

But the Red Hawks would not go quietly in this one.

Their offense exploded in the fourth inning as they tied the game at seven. The bases were loaded with no outs and things looked precarious for the JV squad.

Enter Vinson Beaver in relief who promptly got an infield fly, fielded the ball and threw out a runner at third base who was trying to score. After the heady play, he closed the inning out with a strikeout to escape further damage.

That set the stage for fireworks in the bottom of the final inning.

Rod Sparks led off and was hit by a pitch. He stole second and then raced home with the winning run on a walk off single by Travius Williams. Donnell Jackson had two hits in the 8-7 Griffin victory.

The JV Griffins go on the road Friday night for a show down with the Chester Cyclones.
