The meeting began with a prepared statement by Chair Catherine Kennedy regarding the resignation of two Board members, Robert Drake and Rebecca McSwain.
In the statement, the Board recognized that resignations are personal decisions and will continue to operate until the vacant positions are filled by special election.
“It is important that we continue to work together to improve the academic standards, not only of the Middle School, but for all of our schools,” said Kennedy. “It is important that we stay focused and continue to work together as a community for all children.”
After the opening of the meeting, the Board recognized Fairfield Career and Technology Center (FCTC) student Steven Manning for being awarded the Twin Oaks Student Achievement Awards competition through the Printing Industry of the Carolinas, Inc. (PICA).
Manning received the “Best of Show” in the High School division for his screen-printed shirt entitled “Japanese Dragon” from over 300 submitted entries.
Manning received a scholarship from the Twin Oaks Team and the FCTC received funds as well for the supplies.
Manning is a fourth year student in Graphic Communications at FCTC under Marvin Miller.
PICA Executive director, Jeff Stoudt said “this is a great way to start a School Board meeting, it’s the success a student can have when he applies himself, the community works with him, the procedure works with him and his family works with him.”
“Steven is competitive not only in Fairfield County but across the Carolinas as well,” Stoudt continued. “When you measure success, first you have the young man right here, Steven, but you also have Mr. Miller who succeeds not only in our competition, but in other industry related activities.”
Manning plans to attend Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC after completing High School.
Following the presentation, the Board opened the floor to those who signed in for Public Comment.
Topics addressed ranged form the status of the district to the CRT testing scores to the plans for family activities at the Magnet School.
One public speaker stated “it’s not about me, it’s not about the Board, it’s not about the teachers, it should be about our children.”
This same speaker also expressed concern about faculty members who will not be returning next year.
The next speaker commended the Board for their efforts toward the children at the Fairfield Elementary School, and called for the Board to continue on their path to help the students.
A group representing the Room Parents from the Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science wished to relay to the public concerns over mis-information that they felt was being passed around the community.
The group also called for volunteers, calling the parents to get involved in their children’s education.
Two other speakers spoke on concerns regarding the CRT and scoring levels.
The sentiment of the first speaker was echoed by the others, saying “it’s not about us, it’s about our children.”
the Board then moved on to address several other Action items including a field trip request and fund raising activities among others.
More information on the items addressed at the meeting will be featured in a future edition of the Herald Independent.
