After the meeting, Mayor Roger Gaddy provided a “snapshot” of the budget.
“Here on the first reading of the budget, our budget is less than it was last year. We did fund some of the community organizations (with what the Town calls mini-grants,) unfortunately, we had to fund them at a lesser amount than we did last year.
“But if you look at Lexington and some of the other citizens in the Midlands, they cut out funding to community organizations altogether. Town Council wasp;t comfortable doing that, with the amount of community needs, and the involvement of the volunteers and the job that they have done.
“Even though we couldn’t give them as much as we would have liked to have given them, we were able to give them some money to continue the efforts they’re making to improve the community.”
Mayor Gaddy said the final Phase of the Streetscape project is in this year’s budget, “hopefully, we’ll be able to get that done. We’re still working at getting the second parallel water line in from the reservoir to the Town to increase our capacity to the water plant. We’re still looking for some stimulus money or a low-interest loan to help with that,” he said.
In other business, Town Manager Don Wood announced that the municipal swimming pool would be open beginning Saturday, June 6 and will operate as last year, Wednesday through Sunday from noon until 8 p.m. Admission is $2 per person.
