Newberry County will be receiving additional revenue if a deal goes through with Fairfield County and SCE&G.

For the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station, owned by SCE&G, to be licensed, Newberry County must sign an emergency preparedness agreement with SCE&G.

To do this, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is required to have additional equipment and do mandated drills. The extra cost has led Newberry County to ask for more than the $25,000 a year it was receiving for the service, stating the payment was not covering the cost.

SCE&G was resistant to paying extra for the service and Newberry County responded that it would prepare to keep Newberry County residents safe and not participate in the drills, according to Newberry County Administrator Wayne Adams.

SCE&G then told Newberry County it could enter into a multi-county industrial park agreement with Fairfield County to obtain additional revenue, but Fairfield County did not agree.

Adams says Newberry County then made an agreement with SCE&G that the power company would have to pay the county until a multi-county park agreement was in place.

For the 2009 year, SCE&G will pay Newberry County $45,000, and in 2010 and 2011 SCE&G will pay Newberry County $79,950 for the emergency services.

Payments from SCE&G will increase by 3 percent each year and in 2038 Newberry County will receive $114,881.21 from SCE&G.

If Fairfield County puts Newberry County in a multi-county park agreement to provide Newberry County with annual payments of not less than $200,000 from fees in lieu of taxes paid by SCE&G, the electric company will no longer make the payments.

All of the members of Newberry County Council have voted in favor of the agreement.
