Fairfield Central was able to outduel and hold off a late Raider surge to take a 74-70 win.
At 4-0, FC is starting to establish themselves as legit contenders, however head coach Miguel Burns says his team still has a lot of work to do.
“We still have a lot to improve, we have to get better on defense and start to anticipate passes better,” said Burns. “All we want to do is take it one game at a time and get better and better.”
After a back and forth game in the first half both teams went into the break knotted at 25 apiece. In the third with FC trailing by 6 the Griffin ‘D’ buckled down and put them right back in position to win helping them hold off Keenan for the victory.
“I think our depth wore them down toward the end. We got down by six in the third then our bench took over at the end of the third quarter and to start the fourth. We got ahead and held onto the lead.” Burns added.
Senior Mikel Trapp stepped up big again for the Griffins posting a season-high 20 points to lead FC. He’s averaging 17.7 points per game with a respectable 3.3 rebound average and was named the team’s player of the week for his contributions in the first three games.
Senior Anthony Craig added 19 and junior Carlos Sampson dropped in 18 for the untarnished Griffins. FC began the week as the state’s seventh-ranked AAA team and looks to improve after knocking off Keenan, but ask Burns, and the rankings are really not that important.
“As far as the rankings, we don’t worry about that. That’ll take care of itself We just want to keep winning. At the end of the season hopefully we’ll be playing on all cylinders.”
The Griffins will make their home debut tonight against the Great Falls Red Devils. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
