On Monday, Solicitor Douglas Barfield began the task of convincing 12 jurors that David Allen Goins, of Winnsboro, shot and killed Winnsboro resident Michael Anthony Robertson Sr. on June 30, 2005.

Goins allegedly shot Robertson and his nephew Jamie Ladell Robertson at 8th and Poplar streets in the Mill Village.

The Sheriff’s Office incident report states that the two victims were taken to Fairfield Memorial Hospital before being transported to Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia. Robertson died three days later while at the Columbia hospital. The younger Robertson’s injuries were not life-threatening.

“Investigator Phillips did speak to the victims before they were transported from Fairfield Memorial Hospital ER, and victim #2 (Jamie Robertson) did positively identify that the subject listed (David Goins) was the shooter,” states the report.

Goins allegedly ran away from the screen of the crime. He turned himself in on July 4, 2005, after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Although law enforcement believes the motive behind the shooting may have something to do with a woman, the exact reason is still unclear, said Chief Deputy Keith Lewis with the Fairfield County Sheriffs Office.

From Monday through Thursday, 19 witnesses – including Sheriff’s deputies and family members of the deceased – testified for the state.

Defense attorney Michael Hemlepp was expected to call his first witness by the end of the week.

Goins is being charged with one count of murder/non-negligent manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault.
