David Allen Goins, of Winnsboro, was convicted of murder in the shooting death of Winnsboro resident Michael Anthony Robertson Sr. and sentenced to 35 years in jail by Judge Clifton Newman on Thursday night.

After more than three hours of deliberation, the jury returned with the guilty verdict for murder, but a not guilty verdict for Goins’ second charge of assault and battery with the intent to kill in the shooting of Jamie Robertson.

Goins shot the uncle and nephew on June 30, 2005 in the Mill Village area. Both men were treated for their injuries at Fairfield Memorial Hospital before being transported to Palmetto Richland Hospital. Michael Robertson died on July 3, 2005 at the Columbia hospital. This nephew’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. The four day trial included 23 witnesses for the prosecution and two defense witnesses – one of which was the defendant.
