Beginning at 9 a.m., members of the community are invited to join Lebanon Presbyterian Church and Bethlehem Baptist Church as they gather in front of the Century House at 170 S. Dogwood Ave. in downtown Ridgeway. Coffee and donuts will be served to help visitors stave off the January cold, then, following a brief invocation, everyone will walk together to the Lebanon Presbyterian Church, on Highway 21 – a distance of just under a mile.
There, guests will join in on an interfaith service to commemorate the legacy of Dr. King, beginning at 10 a.m.
“We’ve been doing a Martin Luther King program for the past several years for the holiday,” said Donald Prioleau, an Elder at Lebanon Presbyterian. “Bethlehem Baptist Church wanted to do something this year also, so instead of having competing events so close to one another, we decided to combine them.”
This is the first year that the service has been preceded by a walk, and Prioleau said the idea was to awaken some of the history surrounding Dr. King and the era of the Civil Rights movement.
Prioleau said nearly 20 different churches will be represented at the event, as leaders take turns celebrating the life of the Civil Rights leader.
“Martin Luther King stood for peace and non-violence,” Prioleau said. “We will be saying a prayer for the nation, a prayer for our schools, a prayer for our youth and a prayer for our community.”
A brunch of shrimp and grits will be served following the event at 11 a.m.
