Their opponents, the Lower Richland Diamond Hornets, had other plans, as they took a 60-56 overtime decision.
FC controlled the game early on and was ahead by 4 after two quarters of play, and up by 8 going into the fourth.
The Griffin offense went completely silent in the fourth, as LR outscored Fairfield Central 11-3 to break even at 46 a piece and send the game into overtime.
“We didn’t execute well in the fourth quarter. We let up and weren’t making shots and they were,” Griffins head coach Miguel Burns said. “They are a good team and played a great game. They just got the edge on us this time.”
The game continued to go back and forth as both teams were knotted at 50-50 with 1:45 remaining. The Hornets then pulled away, knocking down two key 3-pointers in midst of 10-6 run that sealed the game as the Diamond Hornets remained perfect on their home court and improved to 10-4 on the season.
The Griffins fell to 1-1 in the region and are 10-5 on the season.
Senior Mikel Trapp, who scored seven of his team’s 10 points in the extra period, finished with a team high 15 points. Danny Miller scored 10 points on 2-of-3 three-point shooting. LaCarlos Sampson added 9 points in a losing effort.
“Mike played extremely well in overtime and did everything he could to bring us back but they kept making plays and we couldn’t get our shots to fall,” Burns said.
