The amount will be determined during the upcoming meeting on Feb. 23, which will give board members time to put in for any additional travel requests.
The board began the fiscal year with a $28,000 travel budget. Board Chairwoman Annie McDaniel estimated that there was approximately $4,000 remaining, following a recent trip to Washington, D.C., taken by five members of the board. The trip to the National School Board Association Conference cost the district a little over $9,000.
Travel is a necessary expense, said McDaniel, and vital to the training of new board members, as well as to the continuing education of veteran members. But, she added, mid-year adjustments to the budget are not something the board wants to make a habit of.
“We’re going to research how we’ve been requesting travel and put procedures in place so when the budget is done we have all travel requests in,” McDaniel said.
McDaniel added that she felt like the board was actually traveling less this year than in previous fiscal years.
She also noted that travel to and from board meetings, to school functions and travel within the district on board business is also covered by the board’s travel budget.
