A month after a U.S. Postal Service curbside collection box in Ridgeway was burglarized, the suspect or suspects responsibly for the crime have yet to be identified.

Ridgeway Police Chief James Ashford said the mailbox at 290 S. Palmer St. was broken into between 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 and 8:55 a.m. on Feb. 16.

“Someone used a motor vehicle to break in and enter a P.O. Box,” Ashford reported.

When Ashford arrived at the scene, he said, there was one stamped letter laying on the street near the Post Office, while several other pieces of mail were still inside the wrecked mailbox.

Ashford said a notice was placed by the mailbox to let residents know that there is a possibility if they used the drop box, their mail could have been taken from it.

A report was also forwarded to the U.S. Postal Inspector.

Ashford said he is aware of two other collection boxes that were burglarized around the same time as the one in Ridgeway in other areas of the state.

The incident is still under investigation. Once apprehended, the suspects will be charged with burglary of a Post Office box and possibly theft of mail.
