Sheriff Herman Young said Ivory Lavonda Chappell, 26, was arrested in Charlotte and is being held by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on other unrelated charges.
Fairfield County has tied Chappell to three break-ins that took place in the county in October and November of last year.
“Since he’s been in custody, we’ve experienced a reduction in break-ins,” said Chief Deputy Keith Lewis.
The first known break-in took place on Oct. 16, in the 2000 block of Heritage Road, where a 32-inch RCA flat screen and several pieces of jewelry had been stolen. Then, on Nov. 10, officers responded to a break-in in the 3000 block of Highway 213. According to the incident report, the homeowners reported their 32-inch LCD HDTV flat screen and a jewelry box containing several pieces of jewelry inside missing. The couple’s Wii video game system was also stolen. The third break-in occurred on Nov. 30 between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the 7000 block of Camp Welfare Road. A jewelry box, digital camera and a brass saxophone were reported missing from the residence.
Young said he believes the suspect was mainly stealing flat screen televisions and jewelry, because those items are easy to sell illegally.
“With the economy the way it is, it fuels criminal activity,” added Lewis.
With Chappell identified and in jail, Young said he is satisfied with the way the investigation was handled.
“Everything is at a stand still right now, as far as the break-ins,” Young said. “We are certain they will start back before long, but right now we’re happy with the way things are right now.”
