The Griffins, however, came out on the wrong end of a 15-0 decision, giving the fourth and final Region IV playoff spot to the Chester Cyclones. FC and Chester split their regular season series and both teams finished with a 7-11 record. The Cyclones scored four more runs than the Griffins in the two meetings between the two schools giving Chester the nod.
“We’re disappointed we weren’t able to get back into the playoffs, but all that says is that we have to work harder this off-season and make the necessary improvements needed to be competitive in this region,” Griffins head coach Scotty Dean said.
The Griffins failed to score any runs against the top two teams in the region (Chapin, Lugoff-Elgin) and were outscored 62-0 in four games against this season’s Co-champions.
The Griffins gave up 13 hits and 15 runs Friday evening against the Eagles as the seniors played their final game in a FC uniform.
FC’s Dylan Cruz threw four innings, retiring three batters and walking five. Cruz also recorded two of his team’s three hits in the game, going 2-3 at the plate.
“Fairfield has a lot of talent on their team. They’re a young team, but Scotty has really done a great job getting those guys to compete night after night,” said Eagles head coach Scott McLeod. “The score doesn’t tell the whole story. Those guys seem ready to play every game and that’s a credit to the coaching staff.”
Dean has yet to decide who he will name as the team’s Most Valuable Player this season, but says it will be between his ace pitcher, Antywone Clayborne, third baseman Jamar Richardson or outfielder Vadrick Mozie.
Clayborne finished the season with a 5-2 record on the mound this season. Richardson led the team in RBI’s and runs scored, while Mozie has recorded a hit in every game this season.
Dean is expected to announce his decision in the coming weeks.
