Salkehatchie Summer Service is for high school and college age youth drawn primarily from the South Carolina United Methodist Conference. During the week of camp, participants physically improve homes of needy families and reach out to these families and one another in friendship.

Local residents Polly Parker and Betty Gutschlag have been supporting the Salkehatchie Summer Service by cooking meals for the campers and staff for 20 years.

“The first year we cooked for 32 people,” said Polly Parker. “This year we are making breakfast each day for 193 people. We start preparing at 4 a.m. and the kids are in line to eat at 6 a.m.

The meals are prepared and eaten at Fairfield Central High School. The campers sleep at the high school as well.

“There are so many great stories of the children and the things the school system and community are doing to support this project,” Parker said.
