WINNSBORO — U.S. Senator Jim DeMint stopped in Winnsboro on Monday as part of his “Saving Small Business” tour.

He began the day with a Lancaster County GOP breakfast and made his way to Winnsboro to tour the Honeysuckle Acres Bed and Breakfast located at 70 Honeysuckle Acres.

While touring the business, he discussed the challenges and opportunities facing today’s small businesses. DeMint wrapped up his visit with a Fairfield County GOP lunch. He was greeted by smiling faces as he entered the room just off from the foyer at the bed and breakfast.

Community members, elected officials, and those vying for elected seats in the upcoming election filled the room to hear words from the senator.

Two key issues addressed in DeMint’s sit down with The Herald Independent were economic growth and education.

In the topic of economic growth DeMint said, “The financial cliff is not just Jan. 1 but the fact that we are $16 trillion in debt and there is not a plan to change the fact that we are borrowing over 40 cents on every dollar spent in Washington, which means the dollar will be worthless in the future.”

DeMint went on to say that there is a mentality in Washington that government needs to do more, yet raising taxes on certain groups is not the way to fix the problem. The senator suggested moving toward a more balanced budget as a way to get things back on track.

On the topic of education, moving the regulations back to the states would allow for things to move smoother, but with the federal laws he said it makes it harder for states to show growth within the school systems.

The visits and tours that the senator has taken part in have been a way for many to have questions answered as well as relay a message back to Washington.

Harold Frish, innkeeper at the bed and breakfast, said, “The luncheon went well and the local candidates did a good job. Senator DeMint is very genuine in what says and seems to be very committed to the people of South Carolina.”
