WINNSBORO — Fairfield County Tax Assessor Wendell Irby, was among seven individuals arrested over the weekend following a two-day undercover operation into prostitution and drugs. Irby, 56, of 3253 Kincaid Bridge Road was netted in the Richland County Sheriff’s Department sting operation and charged with solicitation of prostitution.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Unit focused on individuals using Backpage.com for prostitution purposes. During the operation, an undercover narcotics agent posted an advertisement which resulted in over 40 telephone calls to set up appointments for services. When the suspects showed up for their appointments, and requested sex in exchange for money, they were arrested.

He said that prostitution often leads to other crimes, such as robbery, carjacking, drugs or weapons violations. The Sheriff stated that the Department will continue to pursue criminals in whatever venue they chose to commit their crimes. Sheriff Leon Lott said, “if they chose to commit crime online, in our neighborhoods or our business community we will pursue them to the fullest extent of the law.”

Sheriff Lott said a concerned citizen prompted the department to set up the sting which resulted in arrests for drugs and solicitation of prostitution.

During the two day operation, the following arrests were made in addition to Irby:

• Brandon Clea-Evans 12/24/85 26yrs SPMJ and DUS 1st

• Ellison Hudson 09/07/88 24yrs Solicitation of Prostitution

rett1613 - I would appreciate your explanation as to why wanting honesty, integrity and truthfulness in a public official is ignorance.

Mr/Mrs/Ms....it is my pleasure to respond to you in an unbiased and intelligent manner. I agree that the citizens of Fairfield County deserve honesty, integrity and truthfulness from "All" public officials but we have to remember that each of these officials are human and will make mistakes. Now that does not give them the freedom to repeatedly conduct themselves in an unacceptable manner.....and also we should not be so quick to make assumptions as in your statement below a lot of assumptions are made. Public officials are entitled to lunch and what's the harm in stopping to pick up dry cleaning if the official is conducting professional business and the cleaners is in the path to or from their destination. The key is abuse or not.

And lastly but not least to conclude your statement with "Mr. Irby was probably driving a County" is an unfair statement/assumption to make unless you know this to be fact and if that is the case then it would be unacceptable behavior.

Remember to put yourself in their shoes and ask the question can you live a "perfect" life in the publics eye and even if you tried I gurantee you someone will find fault because they/we are always looking for it.

If the number of County vehicles one sees everday around town stopped at Bi-lo's, eating at Wendy's or the Road Runner, picking up dry cleaning, attending children's school programs, etc. is any indication, then there is a good chance that Mr. Irby was probably driving a County!

My My Not another in Fairfield County. All these offenders that are employed by tax dollars. This assessor has either by choice or forced by the system become an oppressor of the Fairfield county taxpayers. Then the county council and school board disburse all the ill gotten gain through systematic channels to ensure the themselves are rewarded. Yes Yes. The tower of corruption is epitome of our Fair politicians in Fairfield count. TAX OPPRESSOR who enjoyed oppressing with a arrogance has been humbled. AMEN!!! Justice is always served one way or anothe

He who is without sin let him cast the first stone. We can all voice our opinion or make assumptions but I gurantee that each of you has something in your closet that you wouldn't want the public to know. Had Wendell not been a public official he would not be receiving this type of scrutiny. He is just a man and men/women will fall but we must pick them up not tear them down.

He has done far more good things than this one bad thing.

Mr. Irby made a terrible mistake but all of us have sinned and falled short of the glory of God. What have we done in our lives that if we were caught could have caused even greater harm? Let's be there to pick him up, dust him off, and help point him in the right direction. Let's be ministers of Reconciliation. If we do not forgive others how can we expect God to forgive us. Let's pray for him, his family, and Fairfield County.

Couldn't agree with you more. However, it all should begin with Mr. Irby's immediate resignation!

Sinned? Er, um... what part of "Prostitution is ILLEGAL" didn't you you understand? He needs to be fired.

BTW, would you feel the same if it was a cop, a teacher, the mayor, your preacher?

If he should be fired then the county councilmen's relative who was charged with drunk driving in a County vehicle should also be fired. It seems to me that forgiveness and redemption on flows to the people in power. Fairfield County it is time to clean house.

Maybe the County will pay to have his record expunged under their new policy of paying for such things.
