WINNSBORO — Christmas will include a lot of home cooking for the Richard Winn Eagles if Coach Joe Pitts and Coach Jason Haltiwanger have their way … in basketball that is.

Both the Eagles varsity boys and varsity girls teams are playing in a two-day tournament that is hosted at Richard Winn Academy starting at 2 p.m. on Friday when the Ben Lippen girls team takes on Newberry. Boys action follows as Ben Lippen takes on Westminster Catawba. The host Eagles tip off at 5 p.m. against Westminster Catawba in girls action. The boys game against Newberry Academy follows at 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the consolation games begin at 11 a.m. for the girls and 12:30 p.m. for the boys. At 2:00 the girls play in their championship game with the boys championship game following at 3:30 p.m. Both coaches appreciate the exposure and the camaraderie that hosting a tournament brings with it.

Coach Haltiwanger was going through scouting reports on Tuesday and expected to see some athletic teams come to RWA. His young squad relies more on schemes and basketball i.q. than simply raw athleticism, so he thinks his crew will have a good chance at maintaining their perfect record that they had as of Dec. 17. The boys will be looking to avenge an early season loss to the Indians from Westminster Catawba.
