SUMTER — The Richard Winn Lady Eagles are a win away from playing for the SCISA AA State Championship again this year after a 43-27 victory over Calhoun Academy in playoff action.
Carson Justice led the team in scoring with 18 points. Jaycie Johnson and Jessie Stidham each had 12 for the Eagles.
After a halftime lead of 30-8, Coach Jason Haltiwanger saw the lead evaporate once the Cavaliers changed to a triangle and two defense in the second half.
Next up for RWA is Bible Baptist. According to Haltiwanger, the match up will be a good one.
“They are very good with a solid post player and a guard much like Carson,” he said.
The team as a whole is taller and has a good, quick outside shooter to balance things out.
“If we play well and play a complete game (instead of a good half of a game like we played against Calhoun Academy), then I think we can win,” he said.
Justice knows the Eagles will have to have their “A” game.
“Now teams have a blueprint of how to stop us, so we have to adjust and be ready,” she said.
Richard Winn played Bible Baptist at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night. Results were not available in time for this edition of the Herald Independent.
If the Eagles won, they will play Saturday at the Sumter Civic Center for the state championship.
